Youth Soccer Gear Checklist: Everything Your Child Needs for the 2026/27 Season

A new soccer season is exciting for young players, but for parents it often comes with one big question:

What does my child actually need?

You don't need to buy every piece of soccer equipment you see.

Start with the essentials and make sure everything fits properly.

Here's a simple youth soccer gear checklist to get your player ready for the 2026/27 season.

1. Soccer Cleats

Cleats are one of the most important pieces of equipment your child will wear.

But don't choose cleats based only on color or which professional player wears them.

Start with the playing surface.

Firm Ground – FG

Designed primarily for natural grass fields.

Artificial Grass – AG

Designed for artificial grass surfaces and typically uses a stud configuration suited to synthetic fields.

Turf – TF

Turf shoes use many small rubber studs and are commonly used on harder synthetic surfaces.

Indoor – IN

Indoor soccer shoes have flat rubber outsoles designed for indoor courts and similar surfaces.

Before purchasing, find out where your child will practice and play most often.

2. Shin Guards

Shin guards are essential protective equipment for soccer players.

The guard should adequately cover the shin without interfering with movement.

A common mistake is buying oversized guards thinking they'll provide more protection. Your child still needs to be able to run, dribble and change direction comfortably.

3. Soccer Socks

Soccer socks aren't just part of the uniform.

They're designed to cover the player's shin guards and help keep them securely positioned.

Having multiple pairs is a good idea, especially when your child practices several times per week.

4. The Correct Soccer Ball

Not every youth player uses a Size 5 soccer ball.

Younger players typically use smaller balls before progressing to the full-size ball used by older players and adults.

The three sizes parents will encounter most frequently are:

Size 3 – younger players

Size 4 – intermediate youth players

Size 5 – older youth players and adults

Always confirm your league's requirements because age divisions and rules can vary.

Practicing with the same ball size used during games helps young players develop more consistent passing, dribbling and shooting technique.

5. Water Bottle

Simple but essential.

Players should arrive at training with enough water, particularly during warm-weather practices.

A reusable bottle that's easy for your child to identify is usually the best option.

6. Soccer Bag

Once you've collected cleats, shin guards, socks, a ball and water, having one dedicated soccer bag makes life much easier.

It also teaches young players to take responsibility for their own equipment.

Encourage your child to pack and check their bag before practice.

7. Goalkeeper Gloves

If your child plays goalkeeper, a properly fitting pair of goalkeeper gloves becomes another essential item.

Youth goalkeeper gloves shouldn't be excessively loose.

A good fit gives the goalkeeper better control while catching, throwing and handling the ball.

Young goalkeepers who train frequently may eventually benefit from having separate training and match gloves.

What Doesn't Your Child Need Immediately?

Parents don't need to purchase the most expensive version of every product.

Young players grow quickly.

Start with comfortable, dependable equipment appropriate for their playing level.

As they become more competitive and begin training more frequently, you can upgrade specific pieces of equipment where better performance or durability makes sense.

Don't Forget Fit

One of the biggest mistakes when buying youth soccer equipment is purchasing everything too large so a child can "grow into it."

A little room in footwear may be reasonable, but oversized cleats can negatively affect comfort and control.

The same applies to goalkeeper gloves and other fitted equipment.

Proper fit matters.
